How Did Dysregulation Happen?
Our bodies are incredibly adaptable, intelligent and wise! They’re dynamic, complex, and capable of spontaneously reorganizing based off of (perceived) stressors. They are constantly surveilling our environment for potential threats or cues of safety, and are primed with data collected from prior life experience to determine what stimuli constitute a threat vs a benign encounter.
So how did we get dysregulated in the first place, given this brilliance and complexity?!
The somatic intelligence of the body far exceeds that of the intellectual mind. Yet we live in a culture that prioritizes qualities associated with the thinking mind. We’ve been taught to ignore, suppress, and overcome the sensations in our bodies if they interfere with our ability to produce. It became a luxury to rest and restore balance to the Nervous System in our culture of hustle.
Yet each time we choose to “push through” fatigue or deny the needs of our bodies, we’re denying our pure expression too. Training ourselves to overcome the body lowers our threshold of adaptability to future stressors, causing more stress to get backed up into our already overloaded systems (ouch).
But this is a story of resilience!
All of the stored, unprocessed life experience that’s held in the body remains with us so we can extract its bittersweet medicine when we’re resourced and supported. What a gift!
Here are some tools to access that well within:
Spend time in nature (with no phone). Let your body remember the rhythm that it’s most adapted to syncing up with. There’s no action here, just be in nature.
Observe your “disconnecting” behaviors. Aim to spend a little more time with yourself and less time with distractions, to let those suppressed sensations and emotions naturally arise. There’s no way around this step – we have to feel it all!
Vitalistic chiropractic care. We’re trained in working with the Nervous System to gently integrate stored tension in the body, and we can help you find your blind spots.
